Experience

More than 40 years of radar research, development and measurement

NORRAD is led by Dr. Richard Norland. His technical career is the foundation of the company's expertise — spanning fundamental radar research, system engineering, RF and electromagnetic measurement, signal processing, field trials, qualification and operational radar systems.

Technical foundation

Where the expertise comes from

  1. Education

Mathematics and geophysics, University of Oslo

Later Dr. philos. in geophysics from the University of Oslo — the scientific basis for radar propagation, scattering and precision measurement work.

  2. Industry

    GECO / Schlumberger

Professional experience with large-scale geophysical measurement and data acquisition.

  3. Radar industry

Radar system responsibility, Ericsson Radar AS

Radar system engineering in an industrial development environment.

  4. ≈11 years

Radar research, Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI)

Fundamental and applied radar research: multistatic and bistatic concepts, waveforms, propagation, clutter and radar survivability.

  5. Teaching

    University Centre at Kjeller

Teaching radar and related subjects at graduate level.

  6. 2001–2019

Founder and Managing Director of a radar technology company

Development of coherent Ku-band, polarimetric and electronically steered radar systems for maritime, environmental and surveillance applications — research through prototype, field trials, qualification and operational deployment.

  7. From 2020

Founder and Managing Director, NORRAD AS

Specialist radar, RF and Radar Cross Section measurement services and independent technical advisory.

Systems developed before 2020 were built at earlier companies and institutions. They are presented here as evidence of experience now available within NORRAD, not as NORRAD products.

Application domains

Radar applied to genuinely difficult problems

Defence and civilian, research and operational — the same underlying radar physics, measurement discipline and system understanding applied across very different environments.

Maritime radar and small-target detection

Radar propagation over sea, sea clutter, detection of small and low-RCS targets including periscopes, and detection of people in the sea during search-and-rescue trials.

  • sea clutter
  • propagation
  • low-RCS targets
  • high-resolution maritime radar

Multistatic radar and survivability

Published work on multistatic radar addressing operation under countermeasures, anti-radiation threats, interference and emission detectability.

  • multistatic
  • bistatic
  • ECCM
  • low-power radar
  • distributed sensing

Phased arrays and advanced RF

Electronically steered antennas, beam steering, polarimetric operation and Ku-band / millimetre-wave front ends developed and field-tested in real systems.

  • electronic scanning
  • Ku-band
  • polarimetric radar
  • multifunction radar

Precision radar and interferometry

Radar interferometry and coherent phase measurement for very high precision displacement monitoring of unstable rock slopes, glaciers and geophysical processes, with atmospheric error compensation.

  • interferometry
  • differential phase
  • deformation monitoring
  • uncertainty

Remote sensing, SAR and space

Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery, radar scattering analysis, target behaviour in SAR and participation in Norwegian space-industry activities — radar sensing and advisory, not spacecraft manufacturing.

  • SAR
  • coherent remote sensing
  • electromagnetic scattering

Surveillance, drones and low-level detection

Low-level surveillance, drone and drone-swarm detection concepts, short-range air defence sensing and fast electronic scanning, plus earlier airport surveillance, tracking and networked radar work.

  • drone detection
  • tracking
  • networked radar
  • movement analysis

Environmental and oil-spill radar

Coherent, polarimetric radar for high-resolution sea-surface measurement and oil-spill detection offshore, including operation in low-wind conditions.

  • oil-spill detection
  • offshore radar
  • sea-surface measurement
